On A More Personal Note

Pam enjoys travel, worked in Europe for many summers during her teaching years, and regularly corresponds with, and enjoys visits from, the European au pairs she hosted during her son Brant’s youth. She also loves entertaining, theater and music (including her less than stellar ukulele playing) and is an avid Elvis fan.

Pam is a seasoned member of the Howland Evangelista Kohlenberg Burnett LLP family, having joined the firm in 2014 after  practicing as a trusts and estates attorney in Boston for thirty-two years.

Pam’s practice concentration is in estate and trust administration and related tax and estate planning matters for individuals and families. She brings a considerable level of experience and expertise with respect to all aspects of the administration of estates, including probate court proceedings, transfer tax law, the preparation of estate, gift and generation-skipping transfer tax returns, post mortem tax planning and the conduct of IRS and state estate and gift tax audits. She serves as a personal representative or executor of clients’ estates and routinely represents institutions and individuals serving in those capacities. In addition to her estate administration work, Pam serves as a trustee of clients’ trusts and assists families with their financial and estate planning needs.

Pam offers significant personal involvement in client matters and brings a caring and thoughtful approach to the individual, financial, legal and tax issues involved in a trusts and estates practice. As a former teacher, Pam is interested in training and has devoted a substantial amount of time to the in-house training of attorneys and paralegals in estate administration and transfer tax matters. She has also served as a faculty member for MCLE (Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education).

NOTABLE EXPERIENCE

  • Pam successfully worked to obtain funds for a Vietnamese orphan girl involved in the crash of a US aircraft evacuating children from Vietnam, and has served as a trustee of the trust holding those funds for the girl (now woman), on a pro bono basis, since 1994.
  • Pam drafted the petition for rehearing, and then the legal brief, in a landmark Massachusetts case resulting in the extremely rare occurrence of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court reversing its own prior holding in a land conservation restriction case.
  • Pam has represented the personal representatives and executors of numerous estates before the IRS and state taxing authorities in connection with the audit of estate and gift tax returns and, with near universal success, has negotiated settlements resulting in no, or minimal, financial impact on the clients involved.
  • During the course of her career, Pam has administered, or supervised the administration of, over two hundred estates and, through knowledge of tax law and post mortem tax planning, has saved millions of dollars for the families and beneficiaries of the estates involved.
